The Idaho Transportation Department's (ITD) Roads and Highways Road Network Linear Referencing System (LRS) HPMS widening event polyline feature class describes the degree to which a roadway can be widened to accommodate additional lanes and identifies the presence of any constraints, such as natural, structural, or environmental obstacles.
The widening potential attribute represents the estimated ability to widen the roadway on either side within the existing or potential right-of-way. The widening obstacle attribute identifies major limitations that could restrict or prevent widening, such as rivers, steep terrain, railroads, adjacent development, or environmental features.
This dataset assists planners and engineers in evaluating corridor capacity expansion opportunities and in prioritizing projects for improvement. Data are reviewed and updated annually as part of ITD’s Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS) submittal to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
